Just one game later, the Patriots were accused of even more cheating, and allegedly deflating balls in the AFC Championship game is as low as it gets. Granted, the Colts were completely outmatched. Patriots illegally had the goal posts centered, making it impossible for Josh Scobee to hit field goals. The Steelers had a brilliant game plan for special teams coming in – pick up the Jacksonville Jaguars discarded scraps. “From the start of the game through the opening 14 minutes of the first quarter, the Steelers’ coaches’ headsets were receiving the Patriots Radio Network broadcast of the game.

A recent ESPN report implicates the New England Patriots of…”shady happenings” within the front office that are leading some begrudged fans to place the ever-popular “cheater” label back on the defending Super Bowl champions.
Count Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison among them.
“I felt cheated when they came here (for the AFC Championship game after the 2004 season) when they picked up, like, 90, 92 percent of our blitzes,” Harrison said according to Neal Coolong. “That’s like going to Vegas and rolling the dice 20 or 30 times and you only lose twice.”

That was 2002, when a then 25-year-old Brady was in his first full season as a starter. The current 37-year-old Tom Brady would have a hard time diagraming 90 percent of any team’s blitzes.
The ESPN report notes that league security officers found evidence of the Patriots diagraming and taping Pittsburgh’s defensive signals from the 2002 AFC Championship game. New England was fined $750,000 total and docked a draft pick for their role in the “Spygate” scandal that plagued the team in the latter part of the previous decade.

The Patriots were accused of “cheating” again in 2015 after the “DeflateGate” scandal surfaced, but only about one-quarter of NFL players actually considered that controversy to be “actively cheating” according to an article in ESPN the Magazine.

Harrison is never shy in regards to the NFL rules policy and certainly isn’t shy when it’s time to talk Patriots, but the former Defensive Player of the Year is rightfully dejected for feeling as if perhaps Pittsburgh’s biggest nemesis had cheated him of an additional trip to the Super Bowl.
